Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like standard physical horror, but beneath Together resides a deep examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the rural area for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that come with any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
