Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Genius in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or was there ever any cohesion maintaining its structure to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, before he to later acknowledge that the board had not mentioned the transfer ban they were facing for accounting issues. Rumours that he might quit were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic on the pitch as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it has been hard to ascertain if they're getting better or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Comeback

One individual remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He completed the last one on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were advocating for him to stay there temporarily. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived initially during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in that campaign, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Uncovering His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was still trying to work out the nature of the player's talent. Labeled as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
